Lady in the Snow

"I remember when I was a little kid, my grandparents used to own a cabin up in the woods its long since abandoned now but me and my girlfriend need a place to escape to for a few days." My voice echoed in my small car. "Well just remember I need you back by the 24th." My best friend and boss Charlie said back, talking on his phone while driving to the local bar. I was pulling into the driveway of my apartment myself as I ended the call and went inside.

My dog Zeus was the first to greet me as I walked through the creaky door; I really need to get that fixed. RAWF Zeus barked and jumped on me, licking my face as I patted him on the head. He got down as I kicked my shoes off and fell onto the couch. My Girlfriend Elizabeth but everyone calls her Liza walked out of the bathroom, after taking a refreshing shower. "Hey hun." She called to me, noticing my feet dangling over the edge of the couch. "Hey baby" I said, muffled by the cushions. I got up and gave her a hug and went to the fridge to grab a beer "I was thinking about us taking a little vacation, to get away from all the drama." I called to Liza, my head in the fridge. "Oh yeah?" she replied "where to?" I snapped the cap off and took a swig of a Beer I had planned to have earlier. "My grandparents used to own a cabin up north, maybe we could camp out there for a weekend and just chill?" she nodded her head as she fidgeted with her hair. "That sounds like fun." She said as she walked into the hallway, disappearing into our room. I took another swig and sat down at the kitchen table and opened up my laptop. After maybe five minutes I found the address from a mass of emails from my grandparent's weeks ago.

Apparently their cabin has been up for sale for a while but it technically doesn't have a new owner yet. Liza came back out after another ten minutes in sweatpants and a long t-shirt. She must've been getting ready for bed. She wrapped her arms around me, gave me a kiss on the cheek, and sat on the couch and turned on her favorite TV show, Snapped, which is all about wives that went crazy and killed their husbands. She worries me sometimes. "Why don't we leave this weekend?" I said to her while looking at some other new emails. "Sounds good." She called back, glued to the screen. I was about to exit my emails when a small news bulletin caught my eye. I clicked on the link and a page opened up with a large picture of a woman, she has lovely black hair and was wearing a long dress. She was lying in a pool of blood in the middle of a snow bank. I scrolled down and found another picture, this one of a different woman with red hair with multiple slashes and stab wounds all over her body, again in the snow. Then there was the last picture, this one was of three multiple women and one man from what it looked like. They were all piled in the snow with a pickup truck off to the side. I found the story itself and began to read:

"Three weeks ago, several bodies, bloodied and mutilated have been found in snow banks all across town. Most of the victims appear to be female around the ages of 16 -20. According to police reports, this may be the cause of the local town Babysitter Mira Hills' brother being sent to Matrons Asylum so many years ago. In testimonies from people claiming to be witnesses to these murders, they claim the killer is a female, Caucasian, and apparently seen wearing all white."

"Damn." Was all I could say to myself. I sat there staring at my computer until Liza broke the silence. "What's wrong?" she asked a worried look on her face. I shook my head and gave her a hug and we ended the day. The weekend came sooner than expected and me and Liza had all of our things packed and were on our way to the cabin. My mind kept tracing back to the news article I read. The idea of a murderer loose in the woods, what if she came by us? I hoped I wouldn't dwell on it too much. We arrived at the cabin a few hours later and we were both tired and wanted to sleep so we decided to unpack tomorrow and sleep in tonight.

The creaking of the door was the first thing we heard. At around 2 AM both Liza and I heard it and we got up and locked the door. Next came heavy breathing, like you'd hear in a POV from a horror movie. I got up and looked around the house and couldn't seem to find the source of the breathing so I went back to sleep. The next few nights went pretty much the same way. Day after day even after we installed a damn big, complex and expensive lock on the door we still got woken up by the creaking. The breathing got louder after each night and Liza was growing more and more terrified. So one night we were both falling asleep and we were expecting the creaking of the door, but we didn't hear anything. Next we expected to hear the heavy breathing, but all we could hear was the whistling breeze of the winter wind. This seemed out of the ordinary for us so we got up and I walked out the front door while Liza made some coffee. I took a look around and didn't see anything strange and was about to go back inside but I nearly jumped back when I saw it, a severed arm hanging from a string from the roof of the cabin. If that wasn't enough I was also greeted with a loud spine-chilling scream from deeper in the woods. Filled with curiosity and worry I ran off the porch and raced into the woods. After what seemed like hours of wandering around I found a woman lying still in the snow. I went to her side and checked her pulse, there was none. I turned the body over and took one look at her face and nearly threw up everywhere. I dropped the body and backed away. The woman's face had an eye falling out of the socket, half of her face sliced off and the words "Her" carved into her neck. At first I was extremely confused but then I got it. I jumped up and began bolting back to my cabin realizing Liza was there alone, I never told her I left. I got back to the cabin a few minutes later and the door was shut and locked. "Liza open the door!" I screamed as I pounded on the door. There was no response so I kept beating on the door until I heard another scream, this time coming within the cabin. At this point I had abandoned all fear and only rage filled inside me as I took a step back and rammed into the door, nothing. I kept at it several times all while listening to Liza's screaming. After maybe the tenth hit, the door flew off its hinges and hit the floor. I got on my knees and threw my face into my palms and began to cry. My girlfriend, my world was lying in a bloody heap across the room; her body split open from the bottom up and half her face missing. Something seemed to be etched into the wall beside her. I somehow got on my feet and hobbled over beside her and barely could see my eyes were full of tears. I wiped away the tears that I could and took another look at what was carved into the wall. "I love you" written in what seemed like claw marks. I took another look at Liza before I broke down again and began to cry once more near uncontrollably. I stayed there for a few minutes letting my emotions take hold when I heard what sounded like heavy breathing. I took a glance up and could see a figure in the doorway. It didn't stay long enough for me to tell who or what it was as it ran out the door. I got up and raced after it. Trudging through what had to have been two feet of snow I managed to come across another cabin, this one much smaller than my grandparents. It almost looked like it was just a port-a-john. There were several dismembered limbs hanging from string on the roof just like the ones on my cabin, and the door was creaked open. I was surprised the police hadn't yellow taped the place up already. "Liza" I mumbled under my breath. "I love you too" I said as I boldly threw myself towards the cabin door.

A news bulletin was put online shortly after.

"This afternoon in a small cabin in the woods right off Highway 45 a grisly murder has taken place. Police came onto the scene to see a young woman brutally murdered inside the home and a man who has been identified as Matrons Asylum escapee Jason Hills, huddled in the corner with a small sickle and razor blade near him mumbling the words "I love you too" repeatedly. Police report that Jason was apparently the real murderer that many believed to be his sister who has been recently uncovered in a shallow grave behind the Mills' home. The local law enforcement advises anyone who lives in the area to be cautious for Jason escaped police custody while attempting to return him to the asylum. He is to be considered armed and extremely dangerous."
