THE FOLLOWING IS LOOSELY BASED ON A SHORT STORY. THE NAMES AND SOME DETAILS HAVE BEEN CHANGED TO SPICE IT UP A LITTLE.

It was a dark, rainy night as it so often is when these sort of things occur. Single mom Hannah and her two daughters, Brook and Scarlett, were all sound asleep. It was about 3 am when it all began.

The deafening boom of thunder roused 16 year old Brook from a sound sleep. The walls shook and for just a split second, the lightning illuminated the bedroom. As the lightning flashed, Brook thought she saw something standing near the foot of her bed.

As her eyes adjusted to the darkness, Brook slowly sat up and strained to see what was at the foot of her bed. A small amount of light from an outside street lamp cast a small glow to the room.

As Brook surveyed the room, her eyes stopped on a bulky mass that was near the 26" TV. She froze in horror as the mass began to slowly materialize like something in a horror movie. She was completely frozen with fear and unable to move a single muscle.

Standing still only a foot or so away from the bottom of her bed was a small boy about 7 or 8 years old. The child was extremely pale with a shock of the blackest hair Sarah had ever seen. The child just stared at her and didn't speak a word.

Ordinarily, this wouldn't be anything too shocking. Siblings frequently ran to the comfort of their mothers or siblings when frightened by a thunderstorm or something else in the middle of the night.

But in this case Brook had every reason to be terrified. Because you see, she didn't have a little brother! Her mom wasn't babysitting anyone and none of the neighbors had any children that fit this description.

Brook's mouth was bone dry, her palms sweaty and icy fingers of fear trailed along her spine. She couldn't move or speak as she just stared at the child specter as it stared back at her.

As the child still stared, he lifted his arm slowly and pointed to the television. Trembling with fear, Brook looked over to the TV trying to wrap her mind around the scene unfolding before her.

Suddenly, sparks flew out of the back of the television. At that same moment thunder boomed like a canon and lightning lit up the sky totally illuminating the bedroom entirely.

The child was still staring directly at Brook, but now his lips were peeled back in the most macabre, grotesque grin Brook had ever seen. She thought she saw something moving among his teeth.

This was all too much. The combination of the thunderstorm, the sparks from the television and the horrifying look of the terrifying child in her room staring at her finally broke her paralysis. Screaming in terror, Brook sprinted to her mom's bedroom.

The screams had awoken Hannah. Disoriented by her child screaming hysterically and the rage of the thunderstorm, Hannah flipped on her lamp and sat up in confusion. Brook threw herself into her mother's arms and wept like a baby.

The screams had also awakened Hannah's youngest child, 12 year old Scarlett. The young girl, eyes in bewilderment, staggered into her mom's room and collapsed onto the bed. Hannah hugged Scarlett close while she still held Brook with her other arm.

The three of them stayed that way for several minutes. Eventually, they all calmed down and Hannah convinced the girls that they all needed to try to get some sleep. It was a little after 4 am now.

They had all agreed to sleep in mom's bed for the remainder of the night. As the girls settled into the bed, Hannah leaned over to turn off the bedroom lamp. But before she turned the switch, an unusual, vaguely familiar noise stopped her.

The noise was coming from the doorway of the bedroom. All three of them turned in that direction. The sound of a child crawling, rapidly, filled them with renewed terror. The girls clutched their mom as they stared at something unseen that sounded as though it was getting closer and closer.

The crawling noise stopped at the foot of the bed. Then to their increasing horror, they all witnessed the appearance of small footsteps on the bed. A mist began to form and then slowly the pale faced little boy Brook had seen only an hour before began to materialize right before the three of them.

Without taking her eyes off of the ghost child, Hannah instructed her girls that on the count of three, they were to run from the room and out the front door.

"Don't look back!" was the last thing Hannah said before she began the countdown.

On three, Hannah, Brook and Scarlett rushed out of the room, through the house and out the front door. Hannah snatched the car keys off the key holder by the front door.

Brook flung the door open and the three of them dashed out into the pelting rain as if the hounds of hell were at their heels. The thought of the biblical story of Lot's wife flashed into Hannah's mind. She knew that she shouldn't look back no matter how bad the temptation was.

Just like in all of those B horror movies, Hannah's hands shook and she dropped the keys once and then twice as she attempted to get the key into the lock. Finally, she was successful. She pressed the unlock button and the girls yanked the doors open and everyone jumped in.

With still shaking hands, Hannah was able to successfully get the keys into the ignition on the first try. She threw the car into reverse, and backed out of the driveway.

A force outside of her willed her to take one last look at the house. Lot's wife once again entered her mind, but she couldn't resist the urge to look.

As the tires squealed when Hannah pressed the pedal to the medal, she briefly glimpsed the face of a small pale faced boy with the blackest hair she had ever seen staring out the window of Brook's room.

THE END
