The Funeral Palour

A hush fell over the students as Pastor Mark entered the lecture hall. He headed towards the board and wrote the word ‘Ministry' – this was the subject he would teach his students during the term. He went on to explain, they had an option of choosing from four services; Wedding, Christening, Baptism or Funeral. At the end of the term a detailed report was required on their chosen service.

Megan chose the Funeral Service. After graduating from Bible School she was going to further her studies in Demonology. She was fascinated with the spiritual realm; demonic entities, spiritual warfare, possessions, exorcism, life after death, etc.

The night arrived to attend the training at the funeral palour. The students were instructed to be there by 7pm. There was a nervous energy amongst them as they waited outside. When Pastor Mark arrived he ushered them into the chapel. They were introduced to the mortician who welcomed them and gave a brief summary of the training for the evening.

The mortician directed them to the furnace area and explained the cremation process. Four bodies had been cremated that morning. He held the ashes in his hand showing them the bone fragments that remained. These bone fragments would be removed before handing the urn to the bereaved family member. Megan asked if she could feel the texture. She examined the content in her hand, feeling its warmth. Samantha remarked, ‘How gross!'

The mortician chuckled as he ushered the students to the walk-in fridge. The fridge contained two levels of steal shelves running along all three walls. Dead bodies lay on all the shelves, waiting to be cremated or buried. Stephen and Matthew refused to enter; they said it was way too creepy. While Megan walked amongst the dead she experienced an incredible sense of peace and stillness. Here there was no rush against time but an atmosphere of welcomed rest.

For the final part of the training; the mortician led them to a room that resembled a morgue. A man wearing an apron was leaning over a gurney. The mortician beckoned the students to come closer. When they saw the body lying on the gurney; they gasped in horror at the sight before them. Tairee bent over and puked on Jackie's shoes. An elderly lady working at a small desk in the corner of the room helped escort Tairee and Jackie to the bathroom.

Once the students' settled down, the mortician explained that an autopsy had been performed on the body. The skin of the chest and torso had been pealed away exposing the internal organs. A few organs lay on a silver tray next to the body. Megan was fascinated when she saw how magnificently the human body had been created. To her it resembled a flawless puzzle. Every organ had a specific place and fit in perfectly with the others.

Megan asked if she could hold some of the organs. She saw a hint of amusement in the mortician's eyes as he handed her a pair of surgical gloves. He said to her; ‘you're a brave one, aren't you?' First she picked up the liver and examined it. She then chose the heart. Megan held the heart and glanced over at its detached lifeless body. She silently asked; ‘Where is your spirit now?'

The heart began to pulsate in her hands. She stared at the dead body in shocked disbelief. Its eyes shot open and glared at her with hostility and malicious hatred. In a demonic voice it said; 'let me show you where my spirit is.' Terror raced through her body. She attempted to scream but fear paralysed her vocal cords. Trembling from fright she dropped the heart causing the other students to focus their attention on her.

Later that evening alone in her apartment she could not shake the uneasy feeling that had accompanied her from the funeral parlour. Before Megan fell into a restless sleep she had the feeling that she was not alone.

She awoke in the middle of the night to the sound of voices coming from her outside window. Groggy from sleep she stumbled to the window; below she saw six figures who were gazing up at her. She shut the blinds and moved away. Too unsettled to sleep, she lay awake. Fifteen minutes later her curiosity got the better of her and she peeked through the blinds. They were gone.

The following evening, she was dragged by two men wearing hoddied robs into a room lit by candles. They held her down and made her to drink blood from a silver cup. She awoke drenched in perspiration, the sheets coiled around her. She staggered to the kitchen desperate for something to drink, to get rid of the coppery taste in her mouth.

Night after night these horrible dreams continued. In her dreams rituals were performed and babies sacrificed. She was dragged to the centre of a room where a pentagram was drawn and was forced to eat the organs of humans while others chanted. On other occassions she was tortured in the most horrific ways imaginable.

During Megan's lucid moments a sense of heaviness weighed her down causing her to feel constantly exhausted. Her thoughts were overwhelmed with hopelessness, gloom and suicide. She walked around her apartment in a dazed state of confusion. Megan dropped out of Bible School. She locked herself in her apartment never venturing out. She shut herself off from the world and welcomed no one in.

On the night of Halloween, she would remain forever trapped in her nightmare. The heart she had held the night at the funeral parlour belonged to a Satanist High Priest and his demonic powers had come to claim her. They took her into the world of outer darkness. The smell of rotten flesh permeated the air. She heard voices crying out in torment as human flesh was ripped and gorged. Megan descended deeper and deeper into the abyss. She saw horrifying images of creatures; eyes of fiery flames and raiser sharp teeth. They cursed and tormented her. There was no escaping the horror as she screamed in agony while their claws tour at her flesh.

Imprisoned in this demonic realm, Megan's soul was lost. She now knew the answer to her question she had asked……..'Where is your spirit now?'
