The Begining of the Outbreak

Jackson woke up to an alarming scream from the next room. It was Aunt Susan. He got up immediately to check it out but then dropped down to his bed and clinched the corners of the bed. Last night's drinking has not left a good after taste. His head hurts and he can't seem to see straight. Just then another scream makes its way to his ears. This time he gathers all the courage and gets up. He pushes his bedroom door open and makes his way towards Uncle Thompson and Aunt Susan's guest room. He could see Emily making her way towards the source of the screams.

"What happen?" exclaimed Emily.

"I don't know, I think Aunt Susan…." Jackson's voice trailed off.

Jackson reached the bedroom door and pushed it open. The scene he witnessed almost made him throw up. He could see a creature hunched over a woman's body, its hands moving frantically ripping away body organs and pulling out others. The bed was stained with crimson red from the blood. Chunks of meat and intestine were dropped around the bed. Jackson wanted turn around. He wanted to hide it from his little sister's view. But it was too late. As soon as Emily saw that horrific scene she let out a scream.

This made the creature to diverge its attention from the dead body towards Jackson and Emily. Blood dripping and a half eaten intestine was left dangling in his mouth. The creature let out a horrific roar and pounced towards the siblings. Jackson pushed Emily out of the bedroom and grabbed a poker stick from the fireplace nearby. The creature jumped on Jackson but he ducked just in time to save himself. Jackson tried to keep some distance between the creature and himself. But a wrong step brought him down to the ground with a loud thud. Light Rugs on Wooden floor was a bad idea after all. Jackson could literally see stars. He turned around on his back ready to be attacked by the thing. The creature jumped on Jackson pinning his hands to the floor. Just then Emily witnessed this and let out a loud scream. This grabbed the creature's attention and since it could see Emily clearly under the corridor light outside the room it changed its target form Jackson to Emily. It made its way towards Emily. Emily on the other hand was frozen in fear. Her eyes were wide open and her mouth emitting sobs of despair. He couldn't let that happen, he couldn't let this creature hurt his little sister. After all these years of protecting her from every single danger, he couldn't let some animal hurt his sister. Jackson got up and swung the heavy poker stick over his head. He brought it in contact of the creatures skull immediately. The hit made the creature drop to the floor, wimping and roaring like a little hurt puppy. Jackson lifted the poker stick again and this time he aimed right for the skull. The poker hit the skull of the monster with a loud squishing sound. Jackson then witnessed another horrible scene as he saw the creature's brains flow out of its skull. He looked away and towards Emily. She seemed to have gathered some courage and stammered, "What was that?"

Jackson shook his head tired and puzzled. Emily stepped inside the room, cautiously made her way towards her big brother. She then turned to the bed and let out a gasp. Jackson noticed this and looked at the bed. The body was Aunt Susan's. Although they could see her eyes flickering and some weird sounds coming out of her mouth, the stomach was ripped open and blood gushed out.

Jackson then looked around to see uncle Thompson. There was no sign of him around. Just then he noticed the wrist of the creature. The creature had uncle Thompson's watch around its wrist. This was enough to confirm what was going on. Jackson turned to Emily.

"We have to get out of here"

Emily nodded nervously in response to her brother's command. He knew what was happening, there were reports about this. He being a reporter had more insight on all this than anyone else in the house. Just then Robert and Cassandra came running into the room. Cassandra let out of scream at what she saw on the ground and then another horrific scream when she saw Aunt Susan. Robert looked at Jackson scared and waiting for answers but he knew he wouldn't be getting any at the moment.

"We should head out, there is no way in hell this pace is safe anymore" Jackson shouted.

They started to leave when Emily stopped Jackson. "Aunt Susan" she said pointing towards the half consumed body of their aunt laying on the bed. Jackson let out a sigh.

"We can't leave her like this" Emily pointed out.

"what do we do? There is nothing we can do to help" Robert exclaimed.

Just then Jackson felt a sting on his arm. He looked at it and a million things started running through his head. What about Emily now? How will she be able to keep herself safe? I can't be with her now, it is too dangerous. Maybe Robert and Cassie can take care of Emily. She gets along with these cousins very well. Yes they can take care of her.

"What is it?" Emily asks Jackson scared.

Jackson is snapped back into reality. He shows the others his arm. Cassie starts to cry while Robert runs one hand over his head and the other sits on his waist as he starts walking around the room nervously. Emily seems to be in shock.

"I got bit" Jackson confirms. This breaks down Cassie and she falls to the ground and starts sobbing. Robert hits the wall near him quite hard that Jackson thinks he might have broken his knuckles. Emily stands there frozen. Gazing in to his brother's eyes and asking for reassurance. Jackson looks away from his sister and towards Robert. " you guys need to leave, NOW!"

"but what about you man? We cannot leave you here" Robert tried to convince Jackson.

"There is nothing you can do now, I have been bitten. If I stay with you all I might do is hurt you guys, and I don't want that to happen"

Emily hugged Jackson and let out a tear. "Now Emily, I want you to be a big strong girl. Go with Robert and Cassie and take care of each other."

"But I don't want to leave you Jack" cried Emily.

"Hey, I'll be watching you, like I always do remember?"

Jackson pushed Emily away from himself and picked up Cassandra. "Cassie, I need you to be strong too. I am holding you responsible for Emily okay?"

Cassandra lets out a sob and buries herself into Jackson's chest. Robert gets himself together and hugs Jackson giving him that look that meant, I'll take care of the girls. Jackson acknowledged that with a little nod of his head.

Robert, Cassandra and Emily started to leave when Emily remembered something. "Jack!" she shouted pointing towards Aunt Susan. Jackson shook his head and confirmed he will take care of it. Emily let out another sob and turned away. She always wanted to show her brother she was strong even though right now she badly wanted to stay with her brother and cry her heart out. Jackson locked the door after them and turned around. He could hear his cousins and sister making their way towards their rooms to gather some resources before heading out. He already told Robert as to where they can find a safe place if something like this happens. He was glad he had that talk with Robert the other day. Jackson made his way towards the center of the room and dropped down on his knees, and started crying. He hardly remembers the last time he cried but this time he cried like a baby. He couldn't hold himself. At one point he wanted to get up and run after his sister and promise her that he will never let her go but then he stopped and thought about it. He can't be with them, not unless he wants them to be safe. He knows what happens once you are bitten; you turn in to one of them.

Jackson kept on thinking endlessly, his mind raced from one thing to another. Then he looked at his arm. From the little light he could see, it wasn't deep. There was no blood flow either. This got Jackson excited. He got up and made his way to the lamp and switched it on. A small mourn emerged from what was Aunt Susan a few hours ago during the family gathering. He examined his arm under the light. From what he could see, there were no bite marks. But rather he saw nail marks, more like a scratch. He tried to recall the briefing he attended last week regarding this news. It seems to spread when in contact to the blood. So unless the creature comes in contact with the blood of a healthy person it might not infect them.

Jackson looked up into the dressing table mirror and saw his reflection. He had a new ray of hope in his eyes. He just might be alright. But he couldn't risk it. His original plan was to lock himself in here and wait for his death. But now, there was this new vitality in him. But he still decided he should wait.

After about two hours of just sitting, Jackson dozed off to sleep. He started dreaming. He saw his little sister running around the park while he watched her from far. Emily looked at her brother and waved and in return Jackson waved too. Just then Emily fell, it looked more like she was pulled into the ground. Jackson yelled his sister's name and ran towards her. But when he reached he saw two bodies. One was Cassandra's mutilated body and the other Robert's. A few meters away lay Emily. He ran towards her and bent down to pick her up. Crying and calling for help but no sound came out from his thoart. Just then Emily's eyes fluttered open and she grabbed her brother's head and dug her teeth into his neck.
Jackson woke up sweating and panting for air. His throat was dry and he searched for water. He found a jug of water near the bed and made his way towards it tripping and panting. When he reached the table he realized that uncle Thompson might have turned from something he had eaten or drank. He was fine hours ago during the gathering and he ate the same food as everyone else. It could be something in this room. As a precaution Jackson pushed the jug away. He picked up the poker stick and stood near Aunt Susan's body which was still moving and making sounds. He lifted the stick and bashed Aunt Susan's head. The moment the poker stick hit the head, the body stopped moving and making sounds. Jackson picked up the poker stick again and moved towards the door. He unlocked it and pushed it open.

He was greeted with a gush of air and many people moving around the house. Jackson shook his head to clear his mind and realized that these were not people. Or at least not what they once used to be.
