The Beautiful Dancer

They say that jealously is on of the Deadly Sins

Jennifer closed her eyes and allowed the music to take control. Her curly black hair cascaded down her elegant back as her shapely long legs allowed her slim body to move effortlessly and gracefully across the floor. As the music drew her deeper and deeper into a place where nothing else existing except her and the blissful sound that allowed her to move freely with no restraints. At that very moment Jennifer felt completely at one with her Creator, this is why she was meant to be, this was her purpose,,,, 'TO DANCE'. Nothing else existed, nothing else mattered. Jennifer continued to dance, lost in an mazing world, where music filled her heart with joy and lifted her spirits to soaring heights. She felt like she was wrapped in a veil of serenity.
But in the far distance she began to hear a high pitched sound that began to shatter her world of bliss. Jennifer was instantly brought out of her reverie to hear Brenda, the Dance Instructor screaming at her. The dancing world had been a tough training ground for Jennifer; dancing before large crowds, judged by the harshest of judges, driven by teachers until her feet bled. Sixteen years in the dancing world had given Jennifer the ability to stand composed, clothed in dignity, with the perfect dancer's smile in place while Brenda threw insult after insult at her in front of all the other dancers. After degrading Jennifer, Brenda spun around and stormed out the building. The silence was deafening; the other dancers tried to busy themselves as Jennifer politely excused herself and walked off the stage.
Alone in her room that night laying on her bed Jennifer could no longer hold back the tears and allowed them to flow freely down her lovely face. Humiliation began to flood through her heart. Brenda's words took root in her mind causing her to believe she was useless and incompetent. Jennifer thought of all those years of dancing; entering one completion after another, receiving so many trophies that her spare room was now filled with boxes of them. She had experienced the privilege of dancing in London on the floors of the Royal Albert Hall and The Grand Blackpool Theatre. Yet none of these achievements could triumph over the cutting words of Brenda.
Emotionally broken and exhausted, Jennifer fell into a troubled sleep. In her dream she was in the darkest place of despair that one could only imagine. Her soul felt lost, stripped of all hope. As she continued to walk in the darkness she saw in the far distance what seemed to be a glowing light. When she approached the light she bent down to take a better look and saw a beautiful perfect white Lily that shone so brightly. In her dream she began to hear music. She did not want to dance but the music enticed her and so she began to move her feet to the sound. Slowly she dance around the Lily. As she danced the light within the Lily grew brighter and pushed back the darkness. As she continued, Jennifer and the Lily become one with the music. Her heart filled with joy and she knew she would always dance. She knew she was 'The Beautiful Dancer'.

Brenda raced down the Hi-way, her laughter could be heard above the blearing music. She was pleased with herself; she had humiliated Jennifer in front of all the other dancers. She hated Jennifer because deep down knew that she was only good enough to teach but never perform. She loathed the fact that all the other dancers where drawn to her kindness and warmth. Brenda despised her natural beauty, her graceful posture and slim elegant figure. No matter how hard Brenda tried she could never achieve what came so naturally to Jennifer. She knew that Jennifer had a gift. But tomorrow night was Opening Night and Brenda would do everything in her power to make sure that Jennifer was not part of the dance performance.
Brenda cursed as she dropped her cigarette but did not slow down as she wanted to get to the bottle store before it closed. She took her eyes off the road to retrieve the cigarette. When Brenda looked up she was blinded by a bright light......

Jennifer was up next, it was time for her solo. As she walked onto the stage she saw that every seat was filled. Brenda's words slithered into her mind, fear gripped her heart and she began to tremble. She closed her eyes and stood perfectly still. It felt like the entire audience were holding their breath. As the music filled the auditorium, the image of the beautiful perfect white Lily appeared before Jennifer and she began to dance. The audience were captured by her beauty and grace. She gave herself over to the music, she drew the audience in and they danced with her. When the music came to an end Jennifer lowered her head and raised her hands finishing her dance routine. Silence filled the auditorium, then the audience erupted with applause. They stood to show their appreciation and gratitude for such a marvellous performance. She bowed gracefully as tears of joy cascaded down her cheeks.

When she awoke, her head felt groggy. Tubes were inserted into her arms and three machines surrounding the head of her bed. As the fog began to lift she realised she was in a hospital room. Excruciating pain shot through both of her legs causing her to scream. The room flooded with light; a nurse holding a syringe injected morphine into the drip. Brenda's pain began so subside as the darkness drew her into an envelope of nothingness.

The Doctor had just started his rounds and had a lot of patients to see before he headed off for a game of golf with the new Neurologist. When he approached Brenda's bed, she was bathed in perspiration and sobbing from the agonising pain. She cried, 'Why are my legs hurting so badly?' The doctor simply replied. 'Not to worry dear, it's natural for a patient to believe they feel pain after their limbs have been amputated. It's known as Phantom limb. We had to amputated both your legs.' He smiled a professional passive smile and walked away. When he entered the next ward he could still hear Brenda screaming and hoped that the nurse on duty would do do something, her hysterical behaviour was beginning to annoy him.
