It was an unusually warm morning for April. The weather was perfect for a spontaneous spring break trip. The tiny trunk and backseat of a black sports car were being packed up by three girls preparing for their relaxing spring break getaway. The sun was just rising and the sky was a swirl of pinks, oranges, and purples. As it got higher the sky became an eerie reddish color.
"Do you really need to be painting your toenails in the car, Melanie?"
"Well, Adrienne, I didn't really have time before we left with you ordering everyone around, trying to get us out of there as fast as possible, now did I?" Melanie replied with her feet hanging out the car window.
"Well just don't get it everywhere. You know how much I love this car."
"Yes, we all know how much you love your car, Adrienne," said Kerri, "It's all you can talk about sometimes."
"Well there is nothing wrong with having pride in this beauty," Adrienne said.
"Hey, what is that up ahead?" Kerri said jumping up from the backseat, leaning on the center console, pointing towards the road.
"What is what? I don't see anything?" Adrienne said, looking around.
"THAT!" Kerri screamed as a giant bird swooshed in front of the windshield and over the car.
"It's just a bird, Kerri. Calm down. You need to get out of the city more," Melanie said in a teasing manor.
"No thank you. If that is what is out in the country then I will remain in the city."
The three girls were headed off to a small cabin that Melanie's aunt and uncle owned, just past the outskirts of the city. It was right by a large, crystal clear lake and surrounded by beautiful woodland. It was about as close to nature as you could get where they lived. Most people never left the city at all, but the girls were looking for a little adventure and needed a change of pace for their spring break. Getting away from the city for a week would do them all some good.
Around noon they arrived at the cabin.
"It's beautiful," Adrienne said, taking in the place. The cabin had a large wrap around porch with rockers on it. The wood it was made of was a deep, rich and glossy color. Beautiful weeping willow branches hung over the roof. The lake water lapped at the shore, just mere steps from the porch.
"I suppose you could say that," Kerri said, clearly less impressed with it. She was not much of a nature person and rarely found herself outside the city limits. They had to beg her to go with them.
"Come on, let's get unpacked and then go for a swim!" Melanie shrieked with anticipation.
The girls rushed inside the cabin, threw their bags in their rooms, and quickly changed into their bathing suits. Melanie and Adrienne ran out to the dock and leapt off without second thoughts. Kerri traced slowly behind and sat at the edge of the dock. "Is it cold," she asked, lightly dipping her big toe in.
"Of course it's cold! It's a lake and it's only April!" Adrienne shouted to her. "You better get in willingly or I am going to come over there and throw you in!"
"Okay, okay! I'm getting in. Geez." Kerri gently lowered her body into the water, still hanging on to the dock, "Okay I'm in the water, I think I'm going to get back out now."
"NO!" Melanie and Adrienne exclaimed in unison as they rushed toward Kerri pulling her into deeper water. "Okay fine. I'm in now, see?" Kerri said sarcastically, splashing around.
"Hey!" An unfamiliar male voice called to the girls. They all turned their heads looking around for the source. Two young men approached them. One was very tall with bright, blue eyes and long, brown hair. The other was a bit shorter, but very muscular with short, blonde hair and a dazzling smile. "We're from the cabin just up the road a bit. We heard voices and thought we'd come check it out," the tall one said. "And I'm glad we did."
"This is my aunt and uncle's cabin. The O'Clearys." Melanie said.
"Sorry, we're new to these parts. We don't really know any of the neighbors yet. My name is Chad and this is Jeremy."
"Hi, I'm Melanie and this is Adrienne and Kerri."
"Well, we're having a little party tonight at our cabin if you'd want to stop by," Jeremy said with a sharp smile.
"Sure, we'd love to"
"Okay, we'll see you then."
Later that night the girls sat around the kitchen counter talking and drinking iced tea, when Melanie asked, "Did those guys seem off to anyone else?" Kerri replied that they seemed nice enough to her. "Everyone seems nice to you Kerri," Adrienne said. Kerri was known to be a bit naive and innocent.
"It was just something about how the one did all the talking while the other just stood there like a puppet," Melanie said shaking her head, "I don't know, maybe I'm just overanalyzing it. It's just a little nerve racking being all the way out here in the middle of nowhere by ourselves."
"Let's go and if it's weird we can just leave and come back here to veg out in front of the TV," Adrienne said.
"That sounds good to me!" Kerri said, at the thought of doing anything not involved with nature.
They all got in the car and drove a minute down the road until they reached the first cabin they saw. "Well, this must be it. I think it's the only other cabin around for miles actually," said Melanie. They headed up to the house just as Chad and Jeremy came out to greet them. There wasn't anyone else around. Chad said they didn't meet anyone else to invite, so it would just be a very small gathering. They all walked to the back of the cabin, near the edge of the lake where a small campfire was crackling. The standard campfire foods of hotdogs and marshmallows were set out.
After an hour or so of polite conversation with the boys about hometowns and college the girls decided to call it a night. "Thank you for the nice evening. We'll have to get together again sometime," they said as they got in their car to leave. "Are you sure you have to go just yet?" Chad asked them. "Yeah, we're pretty tired from the drive up here and the long swim we took," Adrienne said. "Okay, drive safe." They pulled out into the road and drove back to their cabin.
"That wasn't bad, they were nice boys," Adrienne said.
"Yes, they were very nice," Melanie said, Kerri nodding in agreement.
Back at the boy's cabin, they were cleaning up after the gathering and talking about how nice the girls from down the road seemed when they heard a blood curdling scream. It was muffled and distant, but distinctively a scream. They grabbed the skewers from the fire and ran towards the girl's cabin. Melanie lay on the ground clutching her side, sobbing.
"What happened?!" Chad exclaimed.
"He's out there! He's coming. He has Adrienne and Kerri," she whimpered through tears.
"Stay here with her, Jeremy, I'll go look for them."
"Be careful," Melanie whispered as Chad ran off.
"Are you okay?" Jeremy asked.
"So you do speak," Melanie said, rising to her feet, tears cleared form her eyes. Jeremy looked at her confused as she lunged at him, grabbing the hot skewer, piercing it into his fleshy abdomen. He fell to the ground screaming in pain. She pulled the skewer back out and stabbed him again pinning him to the ground. "Now don't go anywhere," she laughed before running off into the woods.
She met up with Kerri and Adrienne who were waiting for her. "Did you find him?" She asked them, "I sent him into the woods after you two. Boys are always the easiest, so gullible."
"No we haven't seen or heard him at all. Are you sure you sent him this way?" Adrienne asked.
Chad had seen the whole thing and was hiding behind a willow, just a few feet from them, holding his breath and not making a sound. A spider crawled across his face. He tried to blow it off of him, but the girls heard. They snapped their head towards the noise and approached the tree. Chad sprinted away as they neared. They stalked their prey and tackled him to the ground. He fought them, but they were strong.
"Why are you doing this? Why did you kill Jeremy?" He said struggling under their grasp.
"This is what we do. This is who we are," Adrienne snarled at him. "We come up to this cabin every so often, lure in unsuspecting victims, and have a little fun. Why do you think there has been a new tenet at that cabin of yours every year?"
"Now don't ruin our fun," Kerri said with a wicked smile.
The sun was rising as the morning neared. Again, the sky was a deep, swirling red. They packed up the tiny trunk of the little, black car and drove off, passing other cars that would never know of what they had done.
