sins of the Mother

Lesley would never have imagined that the type of love she feels for Juli, really exists.  As eternal as the universe and unconditional.  It is also clear that Juli has the same love for her.  Juli can't say it yet, but she shows it through her little toothless smiles and the clapping of her teeny-tiny hands whenever Lesley enters the room.  Because she is only ten months old, Juli is a handfull, but Lesley won't exchange that for all the gold in the world.  To take care of Juli is the most satisfying thing she ever did.
Lesley takes Juli out the bath and holds the soft wet body of her daughter against her just to feel the love radiating between the two of them
Minutes later she dresses Juli in her soft pajamas, while softly singing a lullaby to her.
She picks up the baby and with her right hand she holds her breast between her thumb and index finger and put the nipple in the baby's mouth.  As she walks up and down with the feeding baby cradled in her arm, she enjoysthe small, satisfied sounds coming from her baby.
Once Juli is asleep, she puts her carefully down on the bed.  She makes sure that there is a huge soft cushion on both sides, so that baby can't roll from the bed.  For a few seconds she stands over her daughter and lays a soft kiss on her forehead.
She smiles as she watches Juli sleeping, hoping she will sleep throughout the night.
The rain falls softly against the bedroom window of her luxury room.
Lesley's current circumstances does not reflect where she came from and how she grew up.  She grew up in Manenberg where they were fifteen people living in a flat so small that it would easily fit into this bedroom.
Her neighborhood was tough and brutal but she made sure that she was one of the strongest and most vicious.
Although she was seen as very tough, her greatest interest was always music.  But she got no support in this from anyone, so the first seventeen years of her life was spent as a skollie.  In a township like Manenberg this is not out of the ordinary and it actually seems as if this is what is expected of you.
She became a criminal specializing in muggings.  To be a successful mugger one needs to be fast and very intelligent.  She was both and was thus very successful.
That morning when she robbed the old woman, was the turning point in her life. The old woman seemed so weak and helpless, but she resisted most fiercely once the mugging was in progress.  Lesley couldn't believe that someone who appeared so weak could have such a lot of power and determination.  As Lesley was struggling to get the bag out of the old woman's grasp, it seems as if she knew what Lesley was going to do even before she did it.
But Lesley was younger and stronger.  She wrenched the bag violently from her victim's hand, making the old woman loose her balance and slide hard over the smooth tiles of the shopping center.  The old woman cried out pathetically.
This was one of the few times in her life that she felt bad for someone else.
As she ran away into the crowd she could hear the old woman shouting something behind her.  It almost sounded like an unknown language.
When she and her accomplished checked out the loot, they couldn't understand why the old woman struggled so hard, because there really was almost nothing in the bag and certainly nothing of value.  It contained, some big pins for baby nappies, a small box of Wet Ones, baby powder, some powder in a little bag and an old purse with some banknotes in it.  The bag itself was almost valueless.
The only other thing was an old photo.
The photo seemed to be incredibly old.  The person on the photo looked like a much younger version of the old woman.  But looking at the age of the photo itself, it must have been over a hundred years old.
Lesley was fascinated by the photo and kept it.  After a while it seemed as if there was something written at the bottom of the photo.  Each time she took out the photo to look at it, it seemed that whatever was written there became more prominent.  She could swear there was nothing written on the photo when she looked at it for the first time, but now she wasn't sure anymore.
And then one day she could make out what was written there.  It said: eersteling in a strange cursive type of handwriting.  Eersteling means first born.  She really couldn't understand it; was the person on the photo called Eersteling, or what?  That evening, when she had another look at the photo, it seemed as if the woman, looked straight at her and was smiling.  She immediately tore the photo into little pieces and threw it away.  This was definitely not the type of stuff she wanted in her possession.
Her life was changing.  Her natural talent for music and especially for singing was noted and it wasn't long before she was a member of a heavy metal group.
The Raging Reptiles, they called themselves.
The people of the Cape Flats don't care much for heavy metal music, but she and her group became well known in the northern suburbs, especially in the clubs frequented by bikers.
The crowds loved them.  They even brought out two CD's of their best songs; thirteen of which she composed and sung herself.
To say that they were wild, would be the understatement of the decade.  As a heavy metal group they had a reputation to uphold.  Drugs and strong liquor was their staple.

But then she met Shawn and her wild life finally came to an end.  Even the inborn wildness of the Cape Flats left her in stages.
Shawn led her to a more calm and "normal" life.  They got married and now she have Juli.
Shawn is away on a business trip and she and Juli is alone at home.
Because music is in her blood she started writing and composing soon after Juli's birth.  She don't think she will even go back to singing professionally again, but she can still compose.  She can easily sell her compositions and she had many offers for it already.
Sit sits down in front of her computer and puts on her earphones.  She has software on her computer to compose mostly anything and to prepare the music for a complete band.  How technology has advanced in comparison to when she was a child and had to write her songs in an old schoolbook.
She suddenly feels sleepy.  Strange.  She can't understand why, because she had a quick nap this afternoon, especially to compose tonight when Juli is asleep.  There is really no reason for her to be sleepy now.
But she can't resist the sudden sleepiness.
She decides to have a lie down – just for a few minutes - next to Juli.  She has a lot of ideas in her head at the moment and she wants to get it on paper tonight.
As she carefully gets onto the bed so as not to wake her baby, she hears Juli's restful breathing.
She feels how the sleep overtakes her and softly descends on her like a huge, very comfortable blanket.

But just before she falls completely asleep, she hears a strange noise.
She opens her eyes, just in time to see a dark figure climbing in by the bedroom window.
Now she is very glad that she didn't fall asleep straightaway.  Adrenalin explodes into her bloodstream, filling her with energy.
She was never known as a scared or nervous person.  She grew up on the Cape Flats where there is no place for people like that.  She can defend herself very well.
Anyone who breaks into her house and put her and Juli in danger is going to learn the hard way not to mess with her.
The burglar turns around and the light falls on her.  Lesley can't believe her eyes.
The burglar is not human…it is a Nillahag.
But how is this possible?
She never knew that Nillahags really exists.
She learned about Nillahags when she was composing songs for the Raging Reptiles.  She had to do a lot of research about the occult, because most of their songs were about that.  During this research she learned about the Nillahag.
The Nillaghad is a small, pitch black demon that steals human babies and leave their own spawn in its place.  Their spawn takes the form of a human baby and is thus brought up as a human.
When they are old enough to feed, they kill their parents first and devour them, before entering the world to bring further mischief.
Many "people" living in the townships are actually the spawn of the Nillahag.
Lesley knows immediately that the Nillahag came here tonight to steal Juli.  The Nillahag must have thought that she will be in the study, busy composing.  With the earphones on she would have never heard her stealing the baby.  But luckily the sleep came over her.  Maybe it was her own sixth sense that brought the sleep over her to force her to go to the bedroom and protect her baby.
This Nillahag made a big mistake tonight to come to her house to try to steal her baby.
She is not scared of anyone or anything, even demons from another dimension.  She can be as cruel as any demon can be.  And to keep Juli safe she will fight, even if it is against the devil himself.
The Nillahag sees now that Lesley is in the room.  She puts her little bundle down and immediately attacks, before Lesley can even get off the bed.
The Nillahag seems very angry and attacks ferociously.
Or maybe the demon blew some sleeping powder into the room to make her fall asleep.  That is why she suddenly felt so sleepily.  Her sixth sense must have kept her awake.
The demon tries to scratch her eyes out.  Lesley didn't even have a change yet to get from the bed.  She now kicks the demon from her with all her might.  The little black demon flies across the room from the powerful kick.
A deep, angry growl comes from its mouth as it returns lighting fast.
Lesley knows that the Nillahag is going to attack full power and that it is coming to kill now.  She will have to get a weapon.  She desperately feels around with her hand for something to use as a weapon against the enraged demon.  She can just hope that all the movement on the bed is not going to wake up little Juli.
Her hand curls around the big scissors that she used earlier to open a package with.  As she picks up the scissors, the Nillahag jumps on her.  She feels the incredible power of the little fiend.  Once again the demon scratches at her face with its long, razor sharp nail to get to her eyes, but Lesley resists with all her might.
The Nillahag comes from another dimension, but once in this dimension, it must obey its rules.  It is still very powerful, though, and Lesley has to use all her might just to keep the monster from her.
She starts cutting and stabbing the Nillahag with the scissors.  She don't care where she stabs it, as long as she can do damage to it to weaken it.  She stabs wildly at the madly screaming daemon.
The monster is small, very ugly and pitch black with glowing yellow eyes.  Inside the yellow mouth there are what seems like hundreds of very sharp, uneven teeth.  The Nillahag opens her mouth wide and jumps on Lesley again.  It almost seems as if the stabbing have no effect on her, although Lesley can see what seems like blood on the demon.
All the shaking of the bed had woken up Juli in the meantime.  Juli starts to cry hysterically immediately upon waking up.  This makes Lesley even angrier, because this is exactly what she wanted to prevent.  And the thought of her baby getting hurt drives her mad with anger.
Lesley wants to destroy the demon completely now to get rid of it, so that she can see to her baby.  Lesley knows that the little demon wants her baby.  And Juli is really screaming hysterically as if something is hurting her, but she must first get rid of the demon.
Then the word EERSTELING suddenly appears in her mind's eye.  EERSTELING – first born.   She suddenly understands that which she didn't understand those many years ago.  That old lady that she robbed sent her a message.  A message that said she was coming to claim her first born.
But she is NOT going to get Juli.
She regrets robbing the old woman, but she is not going give up her baby for something she did years ago.
The Nillahag's lips curl away showing the hundreds uneven, very sharp teeth. An unearthly roar comes from her stomach.  It is much louder than one would think something so small can make.  But then it isn't from this dimension.  An unpleasant odor fills the air.
Lesley has a chance to sit upright on the bed now and stabs at the attacking monster.  Juli is crying more hysterically.  She must get rid of this monster, because it seems that something is hurting Juli.  She don't know what, because she is between Juli and the Nillahag, but the baby is crying hysterically.
But she will have to destroy the monster first, before she can see to her child.  Lesley is stabbing desperately now, the monster's face, stomach, any place where she can stab it with the sharp end of the scissors.  She feels how the monster tries to damage her with its sharp nails, but she can also feel it is loosing strength.
The baby is still crying hysterically in pain.
Then Lesley stabs the monster in its head.  She hears the skull being crushed.  A loud growl is heart as it is sucked back into the dimension from where it came.
A feeling of complete satisfaction fills Lesley's body after defeating the monster.  She protected her daughter succesfully.
She can now attend to her child.  The crying had stopped.
Juli is unnaturally quiet and even her breathing is not audible.

Lesley wakes up with a start.  God, she did fall asleep.  The whole thing was just a dream.  Everything in the room is just as she left it and the rain stills falls softly against the window.
But then she feels something in her hand.  Something heavy…and sticky.
The realization vibrate through her psyche like a bad omen.
She don't want to look, but she knows she will have to.
She WILL have to look…
The scissors.  A strange lameness fills her from her knees upwards.
The torn baby blanket and blood everywhere on the bed.  The realization flows through her like an ice cold wave.
She lifts the blanket and looks down at the carved up, totally mutilated body of her little Juli.  The small body cut to shreds bleeding all over the bed.  The eyes close and the body lifelessly quiet.
Her loud scream are only overpowered by the loud, hysterical laughter coming from out of the dark corner of the room.
She looks with tear filled eyes and sees the old woman with her glowing yellow eyes and hundreds of sharp teeth.  The old woman shows her the little bundle that she holds in her arms and then she disappears into the darkness of the corner.
As Lesley screams like she never screamed before, all signs of rationality leaves her in one fell swoop as sheer insanity falls over her like a dark blanket…
