Death. It's everywhere. You can't escape it ,and you can't avoid it. It grabs you and freezes you to the very core. It tears you apart inside and out. You'll never forget it. It makes you remember. All of our fears. All of our regrets. Its sears into your mind and pulls you into the dark. You don't even consider being afraid of the one thing that you should really be afraid of. The supernatural. Things like ghosts. Some people don't believe in things like that. Sometimes it can be the worst mistake you ever make. For a teen that lived in my neighborhood, he learned at an early age. He was 17. Brian and his friends were walking from the park drunk. Their visions were blurry except for his little sister,Ashley, who begged to go along with her brother and his friends. She was only 12. She realized an hour ago that Brian had had too much to drink but he wouldn't listen. He was older and he knew best. If only he had taken advice from his younger sibling. On the sidewalk walking home, Ashley heard a noise. Startled, she spun around. Seeing nothing, she thought she was hearing things. She thought nothing of it. She continued walking. Two minutes later, she heard the noise again. Again, she turned around. She started shaking and tugged on her brother's shirt, who was laughing hysterically. Simultaneously, Brian and his two friends stopped laughing. They looked around at their surroundings  The road and buildings were no longer visible. Fog was hovering over the surface of the earth, threatening to smother them in its smokey embrace. Brians friends started to giggle, but Brian's face remained stoic. Seeing his expression, Brian's friends stopped abruptly. The fog was unusual. It swirled and moved around them, stirring the wind. Suddenly, Ashley felt someone behind her. Slowly, she twisted her head halfway, scared to even think what might be behind her. She turned around. Ashley, Brian, and his friends froze, their eyes wide and their feet seeming unable to move. Ashley let out a bloodcurdling scream. She found herself unable to move or breathe. Catching her breath, she looked into the face of something she's never seen before. It didn't resemble a person or anything she's seen in books, on T.V., or in any magazine. The sight was grisly. The thing she was staring at was deformed. Its skin deformed and melting, its eyes a dark black. It was like looking into a void of endless darkness. On some parts of its body, only bones were visible. Blood pouring from its feet, it moved toward Brian and his friends. Instantly, they backed away. One of Brian's friends started crying. Brian stood there as if he couldn't comprehend what was happening. The deformed monster kept moving forward, blood trailing behind it. Faster than any of us could process, it grabbed Brian around the throat and raised him off the ground so his feet couldn't reach the ground. He tried to scream, only to be interrupted by feeling himself choke. He struggled to breath ,but it seemed pointless. Regardless, he wouldn't give up. He may be drunk and weak, but he wouldn't allow himself to die like this. Then something unexpected happen. The thing dropped him. He fell to the ground, gripping and rubbing his throat, his vision even cloudier than before. Struggling to see, he realized the fog had disappeared. Looking up, he felt his eyes widen. Light shined everywhere. He shielded his eyes. Then just as quickly, the thing that had tried to kill him only moments before, slumped to the ground. There stood Ashley. His eyes swelled with tears. Just as quickly, he felt his body stiffen from betrayal. Both of his friends had left him to die. He tried to push himself off the ground, his mind still reeling from the amount of alcohol in his system. He managed to stand up. He embraced Ashley in his arms. He felt himself sway. Her eyes wide with concern, she used all her strenght to support him and stop him from falling. Unfortunately, he was too heavy. He fainted. A few days later,he woke up in his room. He found Ashley and his mother standing over him. Concern and love burned in their eyes. Suddenly, he thought of something. What had killed that hideous thing? What was that light? He looked to his sister, the question in his eyes obvious to Ashley. She just stared back knowingly. She gave him a crooked smile that seemed to say, "This'll be our little secret" and our mother looked confused. She looked at Brian, but he looked just as curious her. Finally, she turned to Ashley who just shrugged. Frustrated, she left Brian and Ashley alone.
Brian looked at his sister and said,"I don't know what you did, but thank you." The appreciation and love for Ashley evident in his eyes.
She didn't need to say anything. She squeezed his hand and left his room.
After that, Brian never drank again. He saw his 'friends' at school after the incident. Not once did they look him in the eye. They know what they did was wrong and disgusting. They wouldn't acknowledge him. Brian had moved on. Ashley and her brother had grown closer. They never mentioned that night when Brian and his friends had gotten drunk. They both moved on with their lives and cherished each day. They protected eachother. Even though neither of them had forgotten that day, they both know that it was a day that changed their lives forever.
