L_rking in the Shadows

I squeezed my eyes shut. Sweat dripped down my face. It was watching, waiting. I could feel its eyes on me. I couldn't open them. If I did, it would know I was awake and torture me. It had killed my parents, and I was next

Earlier that night

I blinked the sleep from my eyes as I woke up. My eyes wandered over to the clock, 3:12am. I sighed as I got up and began the trek to my parents bathroom. I used the bathroom and went to wake them up. I was going to go downstairs and get a cup for a drink of water, but I didn't want to go alone in the dark. But when I tapped on them, they didn't wake up. I pressed my fingers on their necks but got no pulse. My breath hitched in my throat. I went to the phone to dial 911, but I saw the shadows stirring in the corner. I got frightened, jumped onto my parents bed, and acted like I was asleep. It was a bit disturbing being in between my parents dead bodies, but I didn't want whatever was in the house to know I was awake. I could hear its heavy breathing inside of the bedroom. It felt like whatever was inside the house was radiating fear and darkness. I could feel a pair of eyes watching me, waiting for any sign that I was awake. Finally, it stopped staring at me. But it moved towards my left side, where my father was. It stood there for a few minutes, then moved towards the wall. For the next few minutes I heard tiny scratching sounds, like it was writing something. That's when I heard its footsteps moving towards the door. Then, I heard the door shut, and footsteps down the hall. Slowly but surely I opened my eyes. The alarm clock read 5:30am. I was about to rush to the phone to call 911, but my curiosity got the best of me. I looked at the wall it had written on. My eyes widened, my hands clenched in fear. On the wall, written in my own fathers blood, were the words: I know you're awake. I was so caught up in reading the words over and over again, that I didn't hear the footsteps coming back towards the bedroom. I finally jerked out of my fear induced stupor when the door creaked open. It felt like my heart actually stopped. There, at the door, was the creepiest, humanoid creature that I had ever seen. Its skin was a pale grey, and every tooth it had was needle sharp. The hair was pitch black and neatly combed. But the eyes, oh, the eyes. They were pure black. Like a night without the moon or stars. The demon started towards me, so I screamed. This wasn't any scream. This was the most bloodcurdling scream that had ever ripped its way out of my mouth. Then, it looked me in the eyes. I was getting horrible flashbacks of my past. The day my first puppy died. Then, when my uncle had a heart attack. It was just too much. My last flashback was when I discovered that my parents were dead only about 2 hours ago. I felt a single tear slide down my cheek as my world was plunged into darkness.

I woke to the sound of a heart monitor going BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! My whole body ached, but I relaxed. If I was in the hospital, then I had been saved from the demon. Right? My eyes roamed the hospital room, taking in the surroundings. It looked like a normal hospital room. Then, I spotted the guards outside the door. They must have seen the demon before he got me! I slowly got up and opened the door. I turned to ask the guards what happened, but froze. Every single one of them had the same pitch black eyes. I sprinted to the window, to open it and cry for help. As I reached the window, I changed my mind and instead, I threw it open and started to climb down. When I reached the ground, a crowd of people surrounded me. Every one of them had eyes full of black. Some of my last thoughts before I was cut off from the light for the last time was, Is the world doomed to these demons? Is that the last glimpse of light that I will ever see? Is this the end? My name is Ember. If you are reading this, I have been killed by the demons and you are my last hope. You must leave here and go to New York. There, on top of the Empire State Building, is the only cure. You must blend in, there are too many demons to try to go without being noticed. You are the worlds last hope. Find the cure and let this world be ruled by the living once again.
