Invisible Villagers

Some incidents don't have any record in newspapers or police stations, but it stays in our mind for a lifetime. I am discussing such an incident that changed the way of my thinking and the people involved in this.

My village was 5km away from the city. Our village consisted of 40-45 families and each one was familiar with the other. There was a river in between the city and our village. Everyone had their own land and were totally dependent on the crops they produced. Some of them had their cows, goats and poultry farm to survive. The only way to cross the river was an old bridge. On the bank of the river, there was a samshan ghaat (Graveyard). Our village had an old and deep well, that seemed very scary and people generally didn't like to go to that area. It is believed that the well was from the ancient years and the King of the state punished the people by throwing them into the well. There was a man named Mahesh kaka who used to deliver milk from our village to the city every morning and evening.

It is the story of that night when a young widow was found dead in a suspicious way in the very well which I just mentioned. Just after the dead body was found, the clouds seemed changed and there was thundering and lightning which soon resulted in heavy raining. Everybody was shocked and scared and found no cause for the murder of the widow. They started the preparation for bringing her to the samshan ghaat. Mahesh kaka was already late because of the finding of dead body. He had to milk the cows and deliver it to the people of city. He started early because the weather was already bad. He hanged the milk cane on his cycle and moved towards the city after committing it to the villagers that he will catch them in samshan ghaat while on his way back from city.

It was around 10 p.m when he left the village. Just after an hour and a half, the villagers also left the village for the samshan ghaat along with the dead body. Since the weather was unsuitable for villagers and Mahesh kaka as well, the time passed like sand slipping from the hand.

Mahesh kaka finished his job in an hour and returned as fast as he could to the samshan ghaat. As he stood his cycle on one side of the bridge and turned to go down the stairs towards the samshan ghaat, he saw the fire from the chita and heard the noisy sound of the villagers. He tried to reach there as fast as he could. When he reached the chita, he was shocked. There was not a single villager near the chita.

Mahesh turned back and felt drowsy because of what he saw. He saw the widow coming out of the chita with a burned face
and clothes. the lady looks horrible. Mahesh was struck with terror and shock. He was unable to move. His feet became numb and he was filled with horror and was completly hopeless. The burnt lady came near him and said, "Mahesh uncle, don't get afraid, I do not want to harm to you. I decided to marry a man I loved  and some of the villagers didn't want to accept the love marriage and therefore killed me and threw me in the well."

Mahesh was still shocked and the lady came very close to him and said, "Seek revenge!" And with deadly eyes turned away and vanished.

Today after 15 years, he doesn't share that experience with anybody thinking that nobody will believe him.

Wow, that was really good! Just the foreign words and the names really killed the feeling of the story. Other than that, I can'twait for more!
