Harvey kept his car as steady as possible while navigating through the pouring spring rain.  It was coming down in sheets and had been for the last couple of weeks; it was the rainy season so that was normal.  He had managed not to let even a drop hit his body, knowing that if he did, the consequences would be dire.  He'd used everything in his arsenal, including umbrellas, trench coats, and ponchos to cover his skin.  He had seen one too many people disappear within the rain.

No one seemed to know what exactly was causing the new phenomenon; all anyone knew was that if you were caught in the rain, then you were a goner.  It was as if people were vaporizing with each drop.  Harvey was desperate to get away from it; he decided that he would drive until he hit the desert, or at least somewhere that the rain wasn't.

He started flipping through the stations on the radio, needing something to take his mind off of his dismal situation.  The only radio transmissions coming in were that of news broadcasts, all talking about the "deadly rain".  He flipped off the radio, as it was only a grim reminder of the terror that he and everyone else were feeling.

Cars sat on both sides of the road, some were occupied and others were left unattended; no question that the former occupants were never going to return.  The people still in their vehicles were probably just as terrified as Harvey.  The pace at which the rain was falling was making it terribly difficult to see the road and aside from Harvey, no one else was willing to try navigating through it.  Harvey was desperate, he had to get out of there, his survival instincts had kicked into overdrive and he was willing to do whatever it took to save his life.

He really wished he knew what was causing it; some were calling it the rapture, others the apocalypse.  Harvey really wasn't a religious man but now he started to pray.  He'd been praying the four hours he'd been driving, and praying that he wouldn't run out of gas.  His hope had started to wane when he noticed a break in the clouds up ahead.  It looked as if he might have hit the end of the rain.

"Thank goodness!" Harvey exclaimed as the rain lifted and the sun started shining.  He knew he had to take advantage of this opportunity and stop in at a hotel for some rest.  He drove a couple miles further before he noticed a small roadside motel.  He pulled in the paved parking lot and got out of his vehicle.

"Just one for the night?" the man behind the check-in desk asked.

"Yes sir, just one."  Harvey signed in, grabbed his key, and headed back outside.  He went to the trunk and grabbed out the one and only bag he had brought.  As he did so, the manual credit card receipt, which he'd gotten from the clerk after paying, slipped from his grasp and scuttled across the parking lot.

"Dammit!"  Harvey exclaimed as he rushed after it, not chancing leaving it and letting his credit card number fall into the wrong hands.  As he reached the end of the lot he stooped to pick up the paper.  He was so focused on getting the paper that he didn't notice the semi truck roaring by.  As the truck started past Harvey, it hit a large puddle of water, sending it flying all over Harvey.

All that remained in that spot beside the road now, was a duffel bag, a receipt, and a room key.

Good story! Reminds me of an old Stephen King story in which water became explosive and the people were now drinking gasoline. :)
